Simply Creamy Coleslaw

Bag the dry ingredients for this recipe and stock your pantry with quick, 'go to' seasoning blends to make this recipe faster and easier in the future!
(see tips at end of recipe)

The seasoning blend will also make a Cranberry Pasta Salad.

1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 tablespoon dried, minced onion
2 tablespoons dried, red bell pepper
{the original recipe [story of where original originated here] uses dried bell pepper, but I often make it without and it's great.  If you want your version to be just like the original, click here to find a source for dried, red bell pepper}

1 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 pounds shredded cabbage

  1. Combine the dry ingredients with the mayo and vinegar.  Whisk to blend.
  2. Place the cabbage in a large bowl and toss with the prepared dressing from step 1.
  3. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or up to a week.  Serve chilled.

Tami's Tip:
If you just need to serve 3-5 people, reduce the cabbage to 1 pound and use only 1/2 of the other ingredients.  Or, make the full dressing portion, toss 1 pound of cabbage with 1/2 of the prepared dressing and use the other 1/2 to toss with pasta and some fresh veggies for a side dish another day.

Tip #2 ~  Check out my pictorial below to see how I prefer to blend my slaw using a gallon zip top baggie....

First, I like to put the dry ingredients in snack sized baggies
to keep on hand for fast side dish options.
When I want slaw for dinner,
I dump a 1 pound bag of shredded cabbage into a gallon baggie and pour in one of my slaw dressing seasoning blends...

To that I add the mayo and vinegar...
...then seal the bag and smoosh!
Perfect for storing in the fridge
until I need to put it in a serving dish.

OR...if I'm taking this to a picnic or potluck,
the baggie travels well

and I can bring along a serving dish to dump it into later.
{NOTE: This is a 1/2 batch recipe, so this is all the cabbage I need.  However...
if I was making a full sized recipe, I'd now have room to add
the remaining 1# of shredded cabbage,
smoosh some more, and refrigerate until I need it.
NO NEED TO STRESS over getting the dressing to cover all 2# of the cabbage.
After being in the fridge for a little bit,
the cabbage continues to shrink and it all gets covered eventually!}
THIS is a bag of the dry ingredients with 1/2 cup of dried cranberries added.
Because this dressing also makes the famous
Cranberry Pasta Salad too!
By putting the cranberries in the bag,
I'm ready to make this other fabulous side at any time.
I keep these on the shelf with my other blends...always ready to go!
