This year I made some changes to my fridge to help me make those healthy choices faster and easier. Here's one of them...
I don't know about you, but when I think about why I make the food choices I do on a regular basis, it usually comes down to 'speed'. What can I grab right now?! So when I recently made the decision to pay closer attention to the food choices I was making, I knew I needed to make the healthy choices quickly and easily available to me.
It's been about a month now and....It's working!
Keeping lots of options in the crisper section of my fridge has been a huge help.
A big help is pre-dicing and slicing veggies I like to use on a regular basis.
I can open them up to toss into a quick salad...
....or toss them into a hot skillet for a quick stir fry or sautee.
The center shelf of my fridge is now filled with my top 'go to' options.
1. Healthier grains can take a little time to prepare,
so now I take one day a week to prepare a large batch of quinoa and brown rice,
bag it and keep it in the fridge. I can scoop out a portion (large or small)
and toss it into the skillet to heat with a quick stir fry or use cold as a tossed side dish.
(Both are GREAT with some of those pre-diced veggies in the crisper,
a little olive oil and one of my favorite seasoning blends
2. A basket filled with easy to snack on options helps a lot.
Nuts, toasted oats, etc... I am also known to keep sliced cucumber, celery and carrots here too.
They are GREAT for dipping into my homemade salsa!
3. I've become a big fan of spinach.
Whether used fresh in a salad,
sauteed as a side or with eggs
or in a fruit smoothie (you can't even taste it when you blend it in!)
...having a container of organic spinach leaves has become a staple in my fridge.
Cooking with fresh herbs is a great way to add a boost of flavor.
It's easy to keep them fresher longer when you place the cut stems of your favorite herbs
into a small cup of water. Just like cut flowers in a vase!
Placing the cups into a small basket keeps them more secure on the fridge shelf,
and if they do topple over,
the water will pool in the basket and not pour all over your fridge!
